Candles bring warmth, ambiance, and fragrance to our spaces, but they require a little TLC every now and then to ensure they last and perform beautifully. Here are some essential tips for taking care of your candles so you can enjoy them to the fullest!

1. Trim the Wick

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to care for your candles is to keep the wick trimmed. Aim for a length of about 1/4 inch before each burn. This helps prevent soot buildup, reduces flickering, and ensures a cleaner burn, enhancing both the scent throw and overall longevity.

2. Burn for the Right Amount of Time

When lighting a candle, allow it to burn long enough for the top layer of wax to melt completely across the surface. This usually takes about one hour for every inch in diameter. If you extinguish the candle too soon, you risk developing “tunneling,” where the wax around the wick burns down while the edges remain untouched.

3. Use a Candle Snuffer

What did Grandpa used to do? "Lick and pinch." Believe it or not, Grandpa had the right idea! Instead of blowing out your candles, consider using a candle snuffer. This tool helps extinguish the flame gently, preventing smoke and soot from escaping into the air. Plus, it can help maintain the wick’s integrity for future burns.

4. Keep Candles Away from Drafts

Position your candles in areas free from drafts, such as open windows or air vents. Drafts can cause uneven burning, lead to soot production, and even cause the flame to flicker or go out. For best results, place candles in a stable, draft-free location.

5. Store Candles Properly

To prolong the life of your candles, store them in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Exposure to light and heat can cause the wax to discolor and the fragrance to fade. If you have scented candles, keeping them covered when not in use can also help preserve their scent.

6. Clean the Candle Holder

Regularly clean the holder to remove any wax residue or soot buildup. This not only keeps your candle looking great but also prevents potential fire hazards. A soft cloth or paper towel will usually do the trick, and if necessary, warm soapy water can help clean stubborn spots.

7. Repurpose Leftover Wax & Container

Once your candle has burned down, don’t toss the leftover wax! You can melt it down to create new candles, use it as wax melts, or even add it to your warmers. Just be sure to combine similar scents to maintain a pleasing aroma. As for the container, a gentle wash with soap and warm water lets you repurpose it into bathroom storage to hold cotton balls, Q-tips, or other toiletries.

8. Watch the Burn Pool

As your candle burns, keep an eye on the burn pool (the melted wax around the wick). If it gets too low or the wick starts to bend and becomes submerged in wax, it may need trimming or a break. If your candle starts to smoke or produce excessive soot, extinguish it, let it cool, and trim the wick before relighting.

Conclusion

Taking care of your candles not only helps them last longer but also enhances your overall experience. With these simple tips, you can ensure that your candles continue to fill your home with light, warmth, and delightful fragrances for many cozy evenings to come. Happy burning!
